Arsenal news: Gunners ruing Haaland transfer rejection as Wenger backs title claims
The Gunners passed up the opportunity of signing Erling Haaland before he joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2019 after jumping to conclusions on his ability as a striker.
Arsenal have struggled to sign guaranteed goalscorers over the years and things will hurt just a little bit more for the Gunners after they passed up the opportunity to sign Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian has become one of the most deadliest forwards in world football in recent years and things could have been so different for both him and Arsenal had they given him a chance three years ago, with it being revealed they turned him down in 2019. Elsewhere, Arsene Wenger has agreed with Patrick Vieira’s claim that the Gunners are title contenders.
Arsenal ruing Haaland rejection
Arsenal rejected the chance to sign Haaland before the Norwegian became one of the most ruthless goalscorers in world football, with 13 goals in his first eight appearances for Manchester City since making the £51million switch to the Etihad Stadium in the summer showing exactly what the Gunners have missed out on.
And it has recently been revealed by former Molde scout John Vik that Arsenal were interested in Haaland before he left the Norwegian side for RB Salzburg in 2019. The striker has since gone on to become one of the most prolific attackers in Europe as he moved on to Dortmund before landing at City
“Liverpool could have got him. Arsenal could have got him,” Vik told The Athletic. “Everyone was there to watch him but these clubs were seeing a No.9 who was tall and broad and, ‘Oh, he’s going to be a target man’. I couldn’t for the life of me see why they had narrowed him down that way.”
Wenger backs Arsenal title claims
Arsenal icon Wenger has claimed that Mikel Arteta’s side can win the Premier League title – just weeks after club legend Vieira tipped the Gunners to run Liverpool and Man City close in the race for the domestic crown.
The Londoners last won the title under Wenger back in the 2003/04 season – the same year that the Frenchman’s iconic side made history by becoming the only side to ever go an entire season unbeaten in the Premier League era. Unfortunately for the Gunners their powers have significantly waned since then.
However, Wenger has claimed that “there is no weak position in the team” and there is “no completely dominating” club this season, believing that the Gunners now have the perfect chance to take advantage of the situation and give a title push a real go.
Following the closure of the transfer window at the start of this month, the 20 top-flight clubs have been going through the process of compiling their 25-man squads for the upcoming season. But despite another busy period in the transfer market, Arteta has named just 21 players over the age of 21.
As a result, with 14 of those not classified as a Home Grown Player (HGP), Arsenal could theoretically add to the resources in the coming weeks and months. Clubs are allowed no more than 17 players above the age of 21, who do not qualify as an HGP, while there is a limit of 25 in total.
